Mens Tie Guide: Width, Length, Knots and Colours for Every Occasion

A mens tie looks simple, but four decisions change how it looks on you: its width, its length, the knot and the colour. Get those four right and even an inexpensive suit looks sharp. This guide walks through each one, then matches tie styles to the occasions most men in India dress for.

1. Mens tie width

The rule is proportion. The widest part of the tie should roughly match the widest part of your jacket lapel.

  • Slim (5 to 6 cm): for slim-lapel suits and a fashion-forward look.
  • Standard (7 to 8 cm): the safest choice for most suits, body types and occasions.
  • Broad (8.5 cm and above): suits wide lapels and larger frames.

Build also matters. Broad-shouldered men look better in standard or broader widths, while a slim tie on a large frame can look undersized.

2. Mens tie length

Once knotted, the tip of a tie should touch the top of your belt buckle. Not above the navel, not below the belt. Most ties are about 145 to 150 cm long, which works for men up to around six feet with a four-in-hand or half-Windsor knot. If you are taller or prefer a bulky Windsor knot, you need a longer tie or a smaller knot.

A quick fix if your tie ends too long: start with the narrow end higher up, or switch to a bigger knot which uses more length.

3. The four knots every man should know

Knot Size and shape Best with
Four-in-hand Small, slightly asymmetric Button-down and narrow collars, everyday wear
Half-Windsor Medium, symmetrical Standard point collars, office and interviews
Full Windsor Large, triangular Spread collars, weddings, formal events
Pratt (Shelby) Medium, neat Most collars, a tidy alternative to the half-Windsor

Whichever knot you use, pinch a dimple just below it as you tighten. The dimple is the small detail that separates a polished knot from a flat one. A premium tie with a springy interlining makes the dimple far easier to hold.

4. Mens tie colours and what they say

  • Navy: trustworthy and calm. The one tie every man should own.
  • Burgundy and wine: confident and warm; excellent for meetings and evenings.
  • Green: distinctive but still classic, especially in paisley or textured weaves.
  • Black: formal and dramatic; ideal for evening events.
  • Gold and maroon: festive, perfect for Indian weddings and celebrations.
  • Light blue: fresh and friendly; great for summer and daytime.

Mens tie patterns explained

Solid and textured

The most versatile. Texture adds depth without adding noise, so it works with patterned shirts. The navy blue textured set is a good example.

Geometric

Small repeating shapes read as solid from a distance and pattern up close. Very office-friendly. See the black and red geometric tie.

Paisley

Rich and a little flamboyant; lovely for weddings and evenings.

Stripes

Classic business pattern. Keep stripes on the tie when your shirt is plain.

Checks and polka dots

Friendly and slightly playful. The green and white checkered set brings personality to a plain suit.

Which mens tie for which occasion

Occasion Colour Pattern Knot
Job interview Navy, deep blue Solid or subtle texture Half-Windsor
Daily office Navy, burgundy, green Geometric, stripes Four-in-hand
Client presentation Burgundy, navy Small geometric Half-Windsor or Pratt
Wedding (guest) Maroon, gold, jewel tones Paisley, floral Full Windsor
Evening party Black, wine, dark green Paisley, textured Half or full Windsor

Matching your tie with shirt and suit

  • The tie should be darker than the shirt.
  • With a patterned shirt, choose a solid or textured tie; with a plain shirt, any pattern works.
  • Repeat one colour from the tie in your pocket square.
  • Match metals across your accessories: gold-tone cufflinks with a gold-tone tie pin or lapel pin. Read our cuff link guide for more.

Build a mens tie wardrobe

Start with navy, burgundy and one textured neutral. Add a green or blue pattern for variety, then a festive maroon or gold for weddings. Five ties handle almost every event, and pairing each with a matching pocket square doubles how finished they look. Frequently asked questions

How long should a mens tie be?

The tip should touch the top of your belt buckle once knotted. For most men, a 145 to 150 cm tie achieves this with a half-Windsor.

What is the most versatile mens tie colour?

Navy. It suits every suit colour, every skin tone and every formal occasion from interviews to weddings.

Are skinny ties still in style?

Slim ties of 5 to 6 cm remain popular with slim-lapel suits, but the standard 7 to 8 cm width is more versatile and suits most body types.

Which knot should a beginner learn first?

The four-in-hand. It is quick, works with most collars and is easy to tie without a mirror once you have practised it a few times.
